Country Reports

The 16 country reports provide an overview of the data gathered in the EUROSPHERE project during 2008-09. The country reports contain the results of the 18 months of our data collection in 16 European countries with the contribution of around 100 researchers. The reports were authored by the EUROSPHERE’s partner universities that carried out the research. The main source of content for the reports is the elite interviews (around 50 interviews in each country) and information about the institutional features of respondents’ organizations (around 15 institutions per country). These elites were selected from four types of political and social actors, i.e. political parties, think tanks, non-governmental and social movement organizations, and media (newspapers and TV broadcasters).

On the basis of the research results, the reports, on the one hand, elaborate the attitudes and perceptions of the social and political actors towards diversity, the European polity and the European public sphere. On the other, they answer, whether and how different types of social and political actors reach beyond their local, regional and national contexts in order to establish links, collaboration and networks with other European actors, and how they justify the decision to do or not do so.

An important aim when constructing the reports is to balance the descriptions that capture the discourses of each country’s dominant and unique traits, while presenting the findings in a standardized manner that facilitates comparisons. While the main purpose of the country report series is to form a basis for the comparative analyses that will be performed in later workpackages, it can also be read as an independent study.
