Theory/Method Development and Data Collection

EUROSPHERE will identify the existing theoretical and empirical approaches European public sphere and foster a synthesis of the earlier/ongoing relevant research. The sites of this effort are previous and current empirical findings as well as texts of political philosophy. Based on this, EUROSPHERE will further develop its innovative diversity perspective on the public sphere, which we envisage suits an analysis of various features of the diverse European society. Further, Eurosphere will develop new measurement and data collection tools to be used on data that will be collected in 16 countries. These objectives will be achieved through the following three workpackages:

Cross-Country Comparative Analyses

EUROSPHERE will conduct interdisciplinary cross-country comparative analyses. This part comprises three dimensions: (1) citizens’ involvement and co-otherness, (2) the relevant features of social political actors, (3) the relevant features of communicative public spaces. The above-mentioned five communicative public spaces find their concrete expressions and agency through social and political actors. Each of the five communicative public spaces can be expressed in terms of these social/political actors which operate within them. The responses of social and political actors will be measured along the issues of: (1) European Constitution, (2) European citizenship and European identity, (3) Mobility, migration, and asylum policy, and (4) European enlargement. The first two of these policy issues concern internal European affairs related to the articulation of a European public sphere. The last two concern the boundaries of Europe and of the European public sphere.
