WP1 Developing the Diversity Perspective

Lead:
VB (Amsterdam University), RB (Austrian Academy)
Task Group:
WD (FMSH), KWJ (Cardiff University), AhÖ / GK (Sabanci University),
MM (Austrian Academy), PK (Helsinki University), HS (Bergen University).

The objective in this part is to develop EUROSPHERE’s diversity perspective to European public sphere. In this component, three interrelated tasks will be carried out:

  • Developing the diversity perspective’s theory and methods (Bergen Univ.)
  • Fostering a synthesis of previous theories on models of public sphere (Sabanci Univ.)
  • Fostering a synthesis of the empirical research on the European public sphere (Austrian Acad.)
  • Positioning the diversity perspective in relation to the existing scientific knowledge (Bergen Univ.)

In this task group, Gürcan Kocan will write a synthesis report outlining the present state of art in theory developments about public sphere. Monika Mokre will write a synthesis report outlining the previous empirical findings in the earlier European public sphere-research. Based on these, Veit Bader, Rainer Bauböck, Peter Kraus, and Hakan Sicakkan will prepare the first draft of the diversity perspective’s theory and methods. Hakan Sicakkan will prepare a summary report presenting and positioning the diversity perspective in relation to the other existing approaches to the European Public Sphere.

In addition to the state-of-art reports on the most important theoretical and empirical developments in research on the European Public Sphere, EUROSPHERE’s research activities here will also lead to a critical evaluation of the existing theoretical models of public sphere with respect to their capacity to address issues related to the articulation of a European public sphere. EUROSPHERE will, in this part of its work, summarize five different models of European political development and position its own diversity model amongst these).
