WP4 Assessing Citizens’ Involvement and Co-otherness

In this research component, the project will assess comparatively citizens’ patters of involvement and their cognitive/actual ability to act as co-others cf. B1 for definitions). The questionnaires and interview guides comprise multiple items measuring these phenomena. Based on these data, citizens will be compared with respect to their values along these variables. The dimensions of their multiple, multidimensional, and shifting belongings as well as their mental and geographic mobility patterns and involvement in political processes will be assessed, and the causality relations between these variables will be identified. The comparisons will be cross-country and cross-communicative public space as well as accounting for the gender aspect. This workpackage is organized as three separate and interrelated work groups:
WP4.1 Analysis of Citizens’ Cognitive/Actual Ability to Act as Co-others

This task group conducts comparative analyses of citizens’ ability to act as co-others. The persons involved in this task group will collaborate to construct comparative measures of cootherness at the individual level – both quantitative and qualitative. The comparisons will be done along the lines of the public spaces individuals attend to, the social/political actors with which they are affiliated, individuals’ gender, their countries of residence, and other items of identity. Hakan Sicakkan will construct the quantitative and qualitative measures of co-otherness and prepare a draft analysis. Martina Klicperova-Baker, Yolanda Zografova and Hakan Sicakkan will finalize the comparative analysis in collaboration.
WP4.2 Analysis of Citizens’ Patterns of Involvement

This task group conducts comparative analyses of citizens’ patterns of participation/involvement. The comparative analysis will assess the degree of participation and the areas of involvement as well as the types of political actors and public spaces that individuals attend to or claim an affiliation with. Matti Simila will construct the quantitative and qualitative measures of involvement and prepare a draft analysis. Ahmet Öncü, Andras Bozoki, and Matti Simila will finalize the comparative analysis in collaboration.
